Audi C5 A6 Front Brake Rotor Variation

Last Updated: 12/26/2016

Parts Group: Brake rotor
This article discusses the front brake rotor for the C5 Audi A6 Quattro with the 4.2 V8. The main focus is on the variations. Variation A has a particular diameter as to the rotor, the rotor has ten holes in the hub area, it takes two brake pads on either side, and has dual-piston calipers. Variation B has a different diameter as to the rotor, the rotor has five holes in the hub area, it takes one brake pad on either side, and I don't know whether it has dual-piston calipers or not.

The two alternate rotor diameters are allegedly 288mm and 312 mm, but I don't know which is which.

Even within the same production year, my impression is the same model A6 Quattro, even with the same engine size, could have either type of front brake rotor. The production codes are part of the key to the puzzle. The sticker in the spare tire well can help an Audi owner figure this out, though personally I don't know which codes to look for.

Me, I remove the wheel, and look at the brake pads. If I see two on each side side of the rotor, then I know which variation I'm dealing with.
