While working on removing the front brake caliper, I ran into the same issue as when removing the front drive shafts: I needed a 12-point metric tool that was somewhat similar to a male Torx tool. My last set is in some obscure place so I needed to buy another set. I tried to find it online but did not know exactly what to look for. After driving for half an hour in hundred degree Nevada desert summer weather, I was back at the small-town NAPA store where I had last seen this tool for sale. I bought another set, which is all they had in stock. Then once I knew what to look for I found it on Amazon and bought two additional sets. Thanks to this article, so can you.
The tool set is made by Performance Tool, part number W1395. The price for this wonderfully enabling tool set of four tools is less than ten dollars. The largest of these is the much-sought 12mm unit. Good deal! The back end of the tool fits a 1/2 socket.
And no, the car I drove doesn't have air conditioning. Both air-conditioned cars (the 300SE and A8) are out of commission, and so is the A6 on which I'm working. I built lots of character today!
