The information herein is based on my personal car.
The engine compartment of my 1973 Volvo 145 looks very bare. Wide open spaces abound. The few parts in the engine compartment are easily visible. By contrast, the engine compartment of my 2000 Audi A6 Quattro 4.2 V8 looks tidy and secretive. Pretty but serious-looking molded plastic covers abound to hide the messy parts. So, any troubleshooting work as to the relevant engine component has to begin with removing these plastic covers. On unloved Audis, one sign of neglect is that the large center plastic cover is long gone. On my well-loved Audi, it’s still there.

To remove the cover, I needed to first remove four large black Philips screws – or so I thought. Let’s think this through for a minute. The scenario provides much opportunity for creating problems – losing one or more of the screws is a possibility but the worse problem is where the screw might fall into … the depths of some sensitive and complex part of the engine, perhaps.
So, the Audi engineers came up with a better plan. The four large black Philips screws are not removable. I simply have to turn each screw through ninety degrees, and then it pops up by a ¼ inch or so. After I did this for all four screws, I could lift the cover off. Brilliant.
