Audi C5 A6 Quattro 4.2 V8 Electric Cooling Fans

Last Updated: 09/24/2017

Parts Group: Electric cooling fan with motor
This is a case study of a 2000 Audi A6 Quattro with the 4.2 V8 engine, whose electric cooling fan motors were not coming on, to the point where the temperature would rise above the half-way mark when the car was stopped in traffic with the engine idling.

The cause was found: a blown fuse. It's a orange 40 amp fuse physically under the ECU, which is on the driver side of the cowl. Fortunately, the fuse is accessible via the driver side kick panel above the pedals. It is just to the left of a similar fuse to the right, a red 50 amp fuse.

At some point, it might become apparent why this fuse blew and then that root cause will need to be addressed.
