C5 A6 instrument clusters have a central LED panel that's sort of like a mini computer screen that can display a variety of text, symbols and animations. It's located between the tach and the speedo. For the pre-facelift models, the display works in either red or yellow, depending on the context of the message (e.g., washer fluid is low is displayed in yellow; oil level low is displayed in red).
After 20 years or so, most of these LED panels become blurry, as in: they lose the contrast between foreground and background, so it's difficult to discern what's being displayed. The problem is worse when the unit is warm, such as in the summer or when the cabin heat is higher.
The only fix we know is to mail the cluster to a repair business, who charges us $100 or so to replace the central LED panel.
